Remembering the North Florida Surfing Association

In the mid-sixties I became manager for the North Florida Surfing Association. I got Dave Ramos, who was raised in Hawaii, and the retired Secretary and Treasurer of the National Maritime Union to mentor these young men. My daughter "T" was the mascot.

After threats were made to close the beach to surfers, I arranged a meeting with Mayor Hans Tanzler, who worked with us to set aside areas of the beach for surfing. Independent life Insurance Co. allowed us to use their auditorium to show surfing movies. We raised money for Hope Haven Children's Hospital and other worthy causes, setting a good example for our young surfers. The grainy, faded Polaroid photo below is the only photo I have to remind me of these good memories.

I know some of those guys. I was one of the original founders of the North Florida Surfing Association.

It was a combination of two different clubs. Still have the original patch. Best days of my life.
